The Powerful Benefits of Compassion
As the winter drags on, and the world is dark (literally and metaphorically) we need the warmth of compassion more than ever. It can be easy to get negative and not feel like our usual selves...This is where compassion comes to the rescue.
Compassion, means showing understanding and kindness to ourselves and others and reminds us that we are all going through something. It isn't something you need to earn or prove, it is simply there for you to tap into at anytime. To give and receive compassion roots us in the yogic concept of Ahimsa, meaning to do less harm and increase good in the world, something we could all use these days!
When we intentionally shift into a compassionate mindset we are able to see that everyone is going through something, and everyone deserves our kindness, including ourselves. A compassionate mindset means cultivating understanding and patience with ourselves and others and coming together to generate more good in the world.
This month in our daily practices let's focus on offering ourselves and others extra compassion, on and off the mat. Communal compassion and acceptance has power. Lets lean into it as we navigate the end of winter together.
3 Ways to Bring More Compassion into Your Daily Life:
"I Accept Myself As I Am Today": Repeat this mantra to yourself when you are feeling down and feel the shift from cynical to compassionate. Add a hand over your heart and 3-5 deep breaths or a hand over your heart for extra tenderness. Do this as many times a day as you need until you feel it. You can also shift this outwardly to be "I Accept You as You Are Today" and send compassion to others.
Practice Patience: Whether it's trying to meet a goal, or waiting on a friend, try to shift into compassion and away from frustration when things are not happening as fast as you want them to. Remind yourself that everything happens in it's own time and we cannot force it. The delay may be the universe giving you the opportunity to learn more, prepare more or practice patience that will help you when the time comes.
Volunteer: Being of service is a great way to be more compassionate as you give your time and energy to helping others. You could volunteer to read to the kids at the library, walk dogs at the local shelter or bring food to the elderly. Whatever you choose, do it simply because it feels good to give and help, and not because you want to receive anything in return (even praise).
After a month of daily compassion practices notice how you are feeling. Has anything changed within your mind, heart or soul? Has it gotten easier or harder to show yourself compassion? There is no right or wrong answer, just give yourself compassionate space to explore this journey towards deeper self-awareness.
The compassionate light that shines within me, sees and honors the compassionate light that shines within you.
Hugs,
